Evelina Festa

A conscious wait

Evelina is a young woman who waited a long time before becoming a mother. Today she describes herself as a 'commuter mother', she often commutes for work, being an environmental technician who deals with land reclamation, and faces all the difficulties associated with her job of responsibility and travel.

Eight years have passed since the beginning of the quest to become a mother, and when the pregnancy arrived she decided to be accompanied by a therapist, who from the fifth month onwards helped her to live the waiting time to the full, doing all the 'pregnancy activities' that give well-being to mother and child, to ensure that she arrived in the best possible way.

The induced birth went well, lasted less than expected and was helped by prompt and competent midwives and an equally good husband: despite the hustle and bustle of the shift change in the delivery room, the experience was painful but beautiful in her memory.

The first approach to breastfeeding was somewhat in line with the indications of the midwives who accompanied her, They had suggested that the first contact would be immediately after giving birth, a sniffing of the nipple, a skin-to-skin that represents a first approach, the touching of the two bodies. After a long sleep, the baby began to latch on in an increasingly smooth and harmonious manner.

Evelina lived the first stage of her long-awaited motherhood with serenity, because she was able to tackle one problem at a time, living the times with maturity of thought and body, and feeling a strong awareness that in parenting, whatever it may be, natural or by adoption, shared or lonely, traditional or modern, the freedom and health of the mother who cares for it are the most important ingredients for the health of her children.

Breastfeeding: forms and practices of humanity

Breastfeeding: forms and practices of humanity

Breastfeeding is unanimously recognized by the main world health authorities as a fundamental health protection in the short, medium and long term for both the baby and the mother, offering biological, nutritional, emotional, relational and economic benefits.

The most important international scientific societies recommend giving the baby only breast milk for the first six months of life and subsequently accompanying the introduction of other foods with breastfeeding at least for the entire first year of the baby's life, but also up to two years and over if mother and child so wish.

This archive contains some testimonies of mothers and midwives aimed at deepening this theme by offering points of view anchored to individual experiences and sensitivities.
