Luigi Barroero

The truffle and a storyteller

Barroero Luigi, born in 1941, is a storyteller of Belvedere Langhe.
In the interview he presents elements of the folklore of the truffle.
He shows primarily the datura stramonium, a plant used to strengthen the paws of the truffle dogs. He then tells of the making of the evening and the tolling of the bells for the Ave Maria pray, when the truffle hunters went out in the woods. He says a proverb that highlighted how gamblers, storytellers and truffle hunters were "starved". The interview closes with a song about the truffle written in the Thirties.

The white truffle

The archive investigates white truffles, known for their taste and frivolous aspects, but not for their cultural characteristics which plasmed generations of truffle hunters. The research presents a substrate of knowledge documented through dozens of interviews: historical and anthropological elements, rituals and myths on this prized fungus, still considered nowadays a nocturnal mystery. The project was promoted by the University of Gastronomic Sciences, l’Athe National Association “Città del Tartufo”, the national centre for truffle research and the Cassa di Risparmio di Cuneo Foundation.
