Valentina Bergamaschi

A mom in the ward.

Valentina Bergamaschi, an anesthetist in Novara, is the mother of two 3 3 5 year old children. The breastfeeding experience for Valentina was very gratifying and fundamental in the growth path of her and her children. The path, however, was not without difficulties and, although it is, in fact, a natural gesture, it is not therefore simple and linear.

The thought of not being able, of not being able to carry on this type of path, was an integral part of the experience gained by Valentina both with the first and with the second child. Her training course that led her to be an anesthetist was of little value and nothing: "no university course prepares you for the experience of becoming a mother". Valentina repeatedly stresses the need to rely on a person who accompanies her mother's path both to face the problems that arise as they arise and to have a reference to rely on when certainties falter.

In retrospect and overcome the difficulties Valentina tells with passion and intensity the relationship of love that breastfeeding allows to establish between mother and child: an all-encompassing love that unites forever and creates precious and unforgettable moments of ecstasy.

The invitation to give up and seek relief from the initial fatigue and pain often comes from the mothers and parents of the mothers of the last few generations who, mindful of the indications received from the health system of the 1980s, did not face the experience of breastfeeding at the otherwise. A deep furrow that separates and deprives new mothers of a reference that would instead be of great importance.

Breastfeeding: forms and practices of humanity

Breastfeeding is unanimously recognized by the main world health authorities as a fundamental health protection in the short, medium and long term for both the baby and the mother, offering biological, nutritional, emotional, relational and economic benefits.

The most important international scientific societies recommend giving the baby only breast milk for the first six months of life and subsequently accompanying the introduction of other foods with breastfeeding at least for the entire first year of the baby's life, but also up to two years and over if mother and child so wish.

This archive contains some testimonies of mothers and midwives aimed at deepening this theme by offering points of view anchored to individual experiences and sensitivities.
