Catterina Tarasco

A peasant family

Interview in December 2012, Catterina Tarasco was born in Piocca, in the Cuneo Province,in 1924. Her family was one of peasants.
In her interview, she evokes memories of her youth in Priocca and Castellinaldo. She left this village when she got married. She was 21. Then, she moved to Asti, a city where she still lives.
The tale of Catterina sheds light on everyday aspects of the life in the countryside: the work in the fields, the hand-made pasta and bread, the laundry washed in the river using cinder as a soap, the rites and practices connected with pig slaughtering, birth and dead lived in a humble way, within the family.
The words of Catterina are tinted with nostalgia for those old times, when she lived with dignity and serenity although the many sacrifices and the scarce economic possibilities.
