The long life of a public servant

Giacomo Oddero, born in 1926, has an extensive experience in public administration life, having been mayor of La Morra, President of the Chamber of Commerce of Cuneo, and alderman of the province of Cuneo.
He describes the Langa during the second world war, when he was unwillingly involved in the war and the partisan struggle. Therefore he describes the years after the war, the damages left behind by the conflict, and the social silent revolution that took place in the Langa, where one of the major problems was the lack of water, since there is no water supply. He describes his work as a mayor, the services he organized and his political campaigns.
Turning to the experience of as a provincial councilor, he shows his contribution to local agriculture, such as the promotion of the leek of Cervere, creating a festival that is now very popular, and the work with the municipalities to address the problems of viticulture.
He highlight the importance of viticulture and the history of Barolo wine. Talking about  Italian white truffle, he said it has always been an important element of food since the Greek and Roman and then through the Middle Ages. However, the people of Alba were the first who organized a big international event for this product.
Accordingly with Oddero, the myth of the truffle is  linked to the fact that no one knows where to grow, has a unique scent. He describes this product and its characteristics.

The white truffle

The archive investigates white truffles, known for their taste and frivolous aspects, but not for their cultural characteristics which plasmed generations of truffle hunters. The research presents a substrate of knowledge documented through dozens of interviews: historical and anthropological elements, rituals and myths on this prized fungus, still considered nowadays a nocturnal mystery. The project was promoted by the University of Gastronomic Sciences, l’Athe National Association “Città del Tartufo”, the national centre for truffle research and the Cassa di Risparmio di Cuneo Foundation.
