Gino Scarsi

Of truffles and blacksmiths

Gino Scarsi, born in 1948, is the heir of a family of blacksmiths closely associated with the world of the truffle hunters. Scarsi is the artisan who produces the truffle hoe: a fundamental piece of  equipment for the search.

Scarsi describes the use and the manufacture of this tool, telling how he customizes it at the request of the truffle hunters.

In the interview he describes the reality of the Langhe and Roero as "lands of truffles", cultural and natural landscapes marked by the search for this fungus. Scarsi also sings one of the songs of the hunter and provides aspects of festive folklore of the region.

The white truffle

The white truffle

The archive investigates white truffles, known for their taste and frivolous aspects, but not for their cultural characteristics which plasmed generations of truffle hunters. The research presents a substrate of knowledge documented through dozens of interviews: historical and anthropological elements, rituals and myths on this prized fungus, still considered nowadays a nocturnal mystery. The project was promoted by the University of Gastronomic Sciences, l’Athe National Association “Città del Tartufo”, the national centre for truffle research and the Cassa di Risparmio di Cuneo Foundation.
