Giovanni Damonte

The experience of a truffle hunter

Giovanni Damonte, born in 1951, is a truffle hunter of Canale, now retired.

In the interview he tells how he began his experience, thanks to the gift of an old truffle dog given to him by his uncle when he was a boy. In his many years of experience, Giovanni Damonte has always hunted truffles at night, after returning home from work, but the night is preferred by the hunters mainly for reasons of secrecy.

In his interview Damonte also presents the various types of truffles that one can find in Langa and Roero, their characteristics and the techniques used for the hunt.

The white truffle

The archive investigates white truffles, known for their taste and frivolous aspects, but not for their cultural characteristics which plasmed generations of truffle hunters. The research presents a substrate of knowledge documented through dozens of interviews: historical and anthropological elements, rituals and myths on this prized fungus, still considered nowadays a nocturnal mystery. The project was promoted by the University of Gastronomic Sciences, l’Athe National Association “Città del Tartufo”, the national centre for truffle research and the Cassa di Risparmio di Cuneo Foundation.
