
Ferdinando Gallo
Anthropomorphic stones: protectors of vineyards and future
Ferdinando Gallo, interviewed in 2010, was born in Vesime in 1946. Son of a family of sharecroppers, he speaks about his childhood in the countryside and the continuous movements from farm to farm, every year, the Day of St. Martin, a traditional festival in the farming year.
Later Ferdinando’s father bought a plot of land and gave Ferdinando the opportunity to study. At the age of 18, after working as a bricklayer, he attended evening courses to qualify as an electronics technician. He was the first employee at Autoequip, a company in Vesime that produces car-wash equipments. In 1969, at the age of 23, he obtained his high-school diploma, and in 1972 his electronic technician’s diploma. His career really set off at the Avir glassworks in Asti, where he became one of the leading technicians.
Ferdinando Gallo is a modern stone-crafter. The traditional stone-crafter where wanderer artisan who worked the local stone for a dish of soup or little more.
