The man who look for the best waterway
Annibale Volpi was interviewed in 2007 by Pier Carlo Grimaldi. He, born in Coltaro in 1938 in a "chiavica", a sluice-gate,of the floodway between Taro and Po river.
He began his job in 1960, with a wood, female boat which he used for over 40 years. He was a sounder who found the best waterway by measuring the river depth. He then became a "meatore" who controlled the depth and movements of a river by using a jet boat and an echo sounder.
