Enzo Canarelli

A craft brewery at the foot of the Alps in Turin

Enzo Canarelli, one of the three founders of the Aleghe brewery in Coazze (TO), has been interviewed for the Granaries of Memory in 2014. In this interview, he explains the reasons why him and his partners decided to open in 2008 a craft brewery in Coazze, in the province of Turin, and the answer is the high quality of water flowing in Sangone river, from the Cottian Alps to the Po river in Moncalieri. Than Canarelli talks about the connections between this beer and the area in which it is produced, better known for wine, and the typology of beer chosen, produced with low fermentation in open tanks and, sometimes, seasoned with local alpine herbs, such as Artemisia.Canarelli also explains the set of problems they found while starting their activity, from logistic issues in a small village like Coazze, to legislative and economic ones, due to the strong taxation on beer production and selling. The interview ends with a brief excursus on life in Coazze.
