Giuseppe Flesia
Traditions in the Occitan Alps
Giuseppe Flesia , born 1949, was a metal worker and for the Granaries of Memory tells fragments of the traditions of Ostana and the Occitan Alps.
Starting from the story of his childhood and experience as worker in Settimo Torinese, he talks about his longing for the mountains and the stream, a tributary of the Po, of his fatherland.
He talks about the winter watches spent in the stable, narrating legends and fables, and the legendary origins of polenta.
He remembers the carnival Ostana, its masks and its collection, singing traditional songs such as "Zanetta", "the poor deserter", "the daughter of a Chinese man has become a nun," the "man god", a song in Occitan language, and the "bissulin"
He explains the custom of waking the dead, and the rites of marriage
It also reflects on the role of Occitan language as the language or the Po river.
