Pietro Cerina

Memories of rice cultivation

Pietro Cerina, born in 1938, is a rice farmer. For the Granaries of Memory, he, interviewed by Pier Carlo Grimaldi, recalls details of the cultivation of rice and the agricultural landscape of Casalbeltrame.

He explains the stages of rice cultivation and the development of technique and tools employed in this industry: a change marked by the passage from the use of shovels and rice weeders to the one of tractors and herbicide.

He also remember the wildlife, especially frogs and carps, that dwelt in the rice fields: animals that disappeared in the recent past due to the use of herbicide.
