The Sapelo Island red peas.
Cornelia Bailey Is a 70yrs old woman from a small island called hulk hammock , which means an elevated piece of land surrounded by salty water. Cornelia was born and raised in the same island to slave decedents and very aware of her history from the time they were Muslim slave 1790s to the point they were baptized in baptist church.
The island people preferably called “the Gichi” are farmers in a small island without much development except farming and fishing.
Cornelia is one of the people who started an organization to mobilise farmers to grow red peas which is characterized with a red color, doesn’t lose shape after cooking doesn’t get mushy and is creamy inside after its cooked. This particular peas is used in new year and thanksgiving; its grown in small quantity but are working on growing more through the help of donations.
