Nunzio Marcelli

Terra Madre Food Communities of Abruzzian and Molisan Central Appenine Shepherds

Nunzio Marcelli, born in 1954, is one of the Abruzzian and Molisan Central Appenine Shepherds, the Terra Madre food communities.

The community’s activities revolve around rearing sheep in a semi-wild state, mostly in protected areas, and the organic production of meat and raw-milk cheeses. The ancient presence of shepherds practicing transhumance, the seasonal livestock migration, has shaped the ecosystem and was one of the main reasons for the creation of the parks and natural reserves. The preservation of this farming method represents the best form of environmental protection and encourages biodiversity. From a social perspective, over the millennia the existence of this food community has allowed the formation of settlements in the Central Apennines; otherwise the population would have no reason to exist. The community is made up of shepherds, both individuals and those organized in structured or family-run businesses.

Nunzio Marcelli was interviewed in 2012.
